Look Here: RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, illus. by Robert Stewart Sherriffs (post 3 of 3)

This is the third of three posts devoted to Robert Stewart Sherriffs’ illustrations for the Khorasan Edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (London: Collins, 1967); the first post includes a short intro, a couple of links to biographical and other information about Mr. Sherriffs, and a few low-quality JPEGs of pages from the artist’s first publication as a book illustrator.

The texture you see in all of the images is a feature of the artwork. It is not an artifact of the scanning process.

  1. The stylized drapery, the folds and wrinkles, really get to me. Composition for every piece was great too.

  2. Yeah, I don’t know if you read the biography that I linked to, but apparently Sherriffs said that the three years he spent at the Edinburgh College of Art “confirmed my previous conviction that figures and faces were patterns to be studied and memorised — not patiently drawn from life.” In other words — at least, this is my interpretation — Sherriffs took basically the same approach to drawing that animators used to learn at Disney and elsewhere. The approach is neatly summed up by Glenn Vilppu, who has taught “figure drawing, anatomy, and construction” to animation students for many years; over and over in his instructional books and videos, and I assume in his classes, Vilppu says, “Never copy the model, analyze it.”

No surprise, then, that Sherriffs began his career as a cartoonist/caricaturist — and a rather daring one, at that!

Thanks for taking the time to comment!
