Rest in Peace: Jean “Moebius” Giraud (8 May 1938 – 10 March 2012)

French cartoonist, illustrator, concept artist, and (inter)national treasure, Jean Giraud, also known as “Moebius” and “Gir,” died earlier today, 10 March 2012, in Paris after a long illness; he was 73 years old.

Blueberry for over four decades, while as “Moebius,” he drew and often wrote some of the most revolutionary and dazzling science fiction comics ever created — as well as providing costume and set designs for such visually groundbreaking movies as Alien, TRON, and The Fifth Element.

Either career would have placed him at the forefront of his chosen trade; braided together into one astonishing life, the two made him indisputably one of the greatest cartoonists of the second half of the 20th century.

As i told you, i knew him personally for many years, and the first thing which come back to my memory is what an incredible worker he was. The production of Moebius is just phenomenal and he left to us literally thousand and thousand of artworks, and if we except his early work, all of them are stunning. I remember one day i had an appointment with him at his home and when i arrived he was finishing a drawing. He didn’t stopped to draw and i spent the next hours with him still finishing the artwork, putting the colors, etc… nothing would stop him and the incredible creative “fire” inside him!

It’s impossible to have a mind as visionary as he had and flying as such “altitude” — not to mention his amazing sense of beauty — without having a tremendous “fire” inside. But if someone was asking me what was Moebius “secret”, i think i would say that his genius partly came from his ability to keep his “fire” under control, and to redirect it in a creative way. Of course he had enough creative ambition and wanted to be the best, but his childhood which has been not really happy — parents divorced, raised by his grand parents, no sister or brother, etc… — might have been retrospectively a kind of luck. As any child he had to survive and he spent a lot of time drawing which later proved to be more important than anything. In two words, he found what he was born to do in his early years and that’s one of the best luck that one can have — even if the price to pay for this was a not-so-happy childhood. > Jean Giraud obituary by Steve Holland. The artist Jean Giraud was principally known for his work on comic books under two pen names. As Gir, the co-creator of Blueberry, one of France’s most popular strips, his brushwork was detailed and realistic; as Moebius, he used intricate, visually arresting penwork to explore the subconscious in his creations Arzach, Le Garage Hermétique (The Airtight Garage) and L’Incal (The Incal). But Giraud, who has died of cancer aged 73, had an impact on the visual arts that went beyond comics. He was seen as a figurehead linking bandes dessinées with modernism and nouveau réalisme. As the co-creator of Métal Hurlant magazine, he took comics to an older, more literate audience. Knowing my roommate (who I’ll call Rob, since that’s his name) read comics, the employee brought him to him. He was a little, 4” by 6” black, and hardbound Moebius. He contained a bunch of little drawings on medium press paper that felt slightly rough to the touch. The drawings were put down in shiny black ink, their line weights uniformly uniform, and their subject matter various. The thing about the drawings is that they were so perfect the employee thought it was a facsimile of Moebius that some conventioneer had dropped. For a second Rob thought the same thing. But before he pitched it on the lost-and-found he realized it was real. A weird little colored-pencil doodle by Bob Burden and some children’s drawings in crayon were what gave it away.

I met Jean Giraud at the Festival Internationale de la BD Francophone de Québec back in the late nineties… He did a wonderful drawing in my copy of “L’univers de Gir”… However, the most fun part was when I handed him a copy of the first book of “Marshall Blueberry” which he wrote and William Vance (XIII) illustrated. Vance had already drawn Blueberry in it one or teo years before and I wanted Gir’s signature as well… We he looked at Vance’s drawing, he said: “He always screws him up when he draws him.” and then proceeded to add lines here and there in the drawing… I also remember the movie “Les maîtres du temps” based on chracters he created…

    In all of the reminiscences I’ve read since his death, including your own (and Li-An’s, which I decoded via Google Translate), Giraud always shines through as a thoroughly decent, hardworking guy.

    Which is to say, if anyone has anything bad to say about Giraud, they seem to be keeping it to themselves — although, as with Frazetta, there are some who seem have a bone to pick with his wife…

I read Li-An’s text you highlighted… It seems Li-An’s experience with Giraud over the phone is similar to the one of Frazetta and Eastwood… Except in this case, Li-An’s wife said “someone called for you, but he did not leave his name”… And when Li-An called back he found out it was Jean Giraud who had called him…

    However, I do understand that thing that people may have against artists’ spouses… Here is one personal experience: Gregorz Rosinski (Thorgal) was at a book show in Montréal in the fall of 1995… His wife was there with him… He was supposed to sign for one hour. After that hour, there was still a long line of fans… Being nice, he continued for a second hour. He wanted to go on until everyone had their drawing. However, at some point his wife started to talk to him in Polish. And you could see from her tone that she was not pleased about something. My guess is that she wanted him to stop. As fans, the people want their drawing. They think that because they spent time in line and that they bought the book, they deserve it, which could be arguably true… However, it is the artist’s wife who knows when he’s starting to be tired and knows how he’ll be after, health wise… I pointed out Rosinski in this case, but over the years, I have seen others… I think it was also somehow like that with Frazetta… Him trying to be nice to fans and Ellie seeing who would probably try to take advantage of that niceness…


  4. Here’s a post that sums up why some people are not happy with Jean Giraud’s wife:

    “Many people have asked us during these past years why Humanoids hasn’t released the incredible works that Moebius created alone (without Jodorowsky) during his tenure at Metal Hurlant, and that are widely considered not only his best, but some of the most interesting work ever done in the European comics scene.

    “Well, the answer is simple: unlike the rest of the world, in order to be able to publish these works in English (and in Japanese), Humanoids needs to get a formal approval by Moebius, or to be more precise by Moebius’ second wife, Isabelle Giraud, who acts as his business representative. It seems that despite repeated demands during these past years, the English speaking territories are not a significant concern of theirs. It is an unfortunate and very frustrating situation for us just as it is for many, many English language readers worldwide. There is nothing more we can do on our end, BUT we encourage you to launch a petition addressed to Moebius directly in order to get his attention to this real issue. Maybe with your help, we can make the english speaking territories a concern to all those involved.”

    The fans want what they want, and woe betide anyone who gets in their way…

Perhaps more information is available in “Starwatcher Stalemate : Lawsuits between Moebius and Lofficier Span Two Continents” / by Michael Dean. p. 14-15 in The Comics Journal, no. 233 (May 2001) or “Starwatcher Wars : Moebius and Jean-Marc Lofficier Struggle over Worldwide Rights” / Michael Dean. p. 19-20 in The Comics Journal, no. 231 (Mar. 2001). I have recently told by someone who works at a comic book store that the legal issues have been settled and that more translations are forthcoming, but I don’t know if that is true or not.

    Here’s a compressed version of the dirt:

    M., the great artist, has been latched-onto by a notoriously wretched parasite (known all over France under a horrible nickname) whom he web some 15 years ago – she gradually began to tare away at ALL his business relations, as is frequently the case in bad clichés involving a younger bride, and that included the partners of his whom you mention, but many more. Because the parasite is incompetent, she did not exactly go into battle with savvy, and this has led her and her artist husband into some rather ridiculous, pathetic and often self-defeating lawsuits (including one against Luc Besson for plagiarism on the 5th Element, years after M. had signed and agreed to work on the same film). Also because she is uneducated, paranoid, and “manages” everything on her own, it is nearly impossible for anyone to deal with her (on this side of the pond, and all the more in France, where people are much more aware of the situation) – and THAT more than anything is why you are not likely to see any more reprints or translations of his work outside of France. No one in her circle is currently mentally able to negotiate anything in the English language, or in the ‘reasonable’ language…There is a lot of narrow-minded thinking at play, all told, and regrettably for the beloved master, he suffers and waffles through it all, sheepishly, until the bitter end. Or to quote him about it, “I know, I inspire only pity!” That’s the gist of it.

    I might close by saying that although I must sound biased in my description, I have no personal stake in any of this. I do not know any of these people personally… But should you visit any comic book store or setting related to the graphic art world in France, you will be amazed to see the unanimity you encounter, albeit perhaps less informed, regarding this terrible, terrible situation which is so ‘textbook’ it should be taught in school. Art School!

    He is a superb artist, but he is known to be utterly self-defeating in countless ways.

    Keep in mind, Moebius didn’t die in poverty. He lived in comfort. He did only the work that he really wanted to do. He had long been able sell his originals for very large sums of money. He controlled how and where much of his work was presented in print, because he himself controlled many of the copyrights. He travelled the world, and was fêted wherever he went. And so on.

    We should all be so “utterly self-defeating”…


  7. Alejandro Jodorowsky has a couple of interesting things to say in the documentary Moebius Redux: A Life in Pictures (2007).

    Here’s the first, which manages to reduce to point of absurdity the many and varied relationships between illustrators and their wives but which might also contain a grain of truth IN SOME INSTANCES:

    You know illustrators’ wives are very, very miserly. Illustrators’ wives discuss the contract terms… the percentages, this and that. Because the illustrator is like a child. He spends hours drawing, he’s still in his childhood. So he needs a mother to protect him and who makes things work.

    And here’s the second, which some might say slightly undercuts my observation that “if anyone has anything bad to say about Giraud, they seem to be keeping it to themselves”:

    There is Jean Giraud, the artist and Jean Giraud, the human being. They are two things. As a human being, I would be wary of Jean Giraud… because you just can’t grasp him. You never know who he is. I know him as an artist. As a human being, I don’t know who he is. I’ve known him for years now and I don’t know who he is.

    Or maybe Jodorowsky just has a puckish sense of humour…

Here’s an interesting document that has attracted some attention on the Web: it’s Fellini’s Fanboy Letter to Moebius, which was first published as an introduction to the HM Communications special, Heavy Metal Presents Moebius, back in 1981. The scan has appeared on several blogs and in various tumblr galleries, so I won’t reblog that image; instead, my contribution will be to “add value” by transcribing it as follows:

    June 23, 1979

    My dear Moebius:

    Everything that you do pleases me; even your name pleases me. In my film Casanova, I called the old doctor-herbalist homeopathic half-magician half-sorer “Moebius.” It was my way of showing you my affection and gratitude, because you are so wonderful. I have never had the time to tell you how much or why. I hope I can convey that to you now.

    I am in the middle of filming* and as usual I am suspended in a feverish frenzy — perhaps this time even a bit more feverish than usual. I have a distinct feeling that I have yet to begin filming, yet at other times I feel as though I finished a long time ago. I live as if I am suspended weightlessly in one of your oblique universes.

    I am sorry that this letter is a bit hasty and might tend to ramble on, especially because the joy and enthusiasm that your drawings exude demand of me great precision. Yet I find myself telling you of my happiness all at once.

    Discovering your work, and what your colleagues do at Metal Hurlant, I immediately rediscovered a poignant feeling I had as a child. I would wait breathlessly for each new issue of Giornalino della Domenica, which ran “The Adventures of Happy Hooligan” and “The Katzenjammer Kids.”

    What a great film director you would make! Have you ever thought about it?

    What is most astonishing about your work is the lighting technique you use — especially in your black-and-white drawings. There is a wonderful, phosphoric, limelight, lux perpetua, solar-rimmed light effect to your art.

    To make a science-fiction film is an old dream of mine. I have thought about it for many years now, way before the present vogue of these films. Undoubtedly, you would be the perfect collaborator; however, I would never call upon you because you are too complete, your visionary strength is too formidable. What would there be left for me to do?

    That’s why, dear Moebius. I say to you: continue to draw fabulously, for the joy of us all.

  9. Well, I’ve been adding to and fiddling with RCN’s Moebius memorial link list (see above) for almost a week now, and I think it’s finally time to put the thing to bed. I’m a tiny bit disappointed nobody has remarked on that opening sequence of four images; both in terms of the progression of colour and the content, I thought it was pretty cool. Anyway, I do hope somebody out there finds the list useful. Also hope that the links don’t expire too quickly. That’s always annoying.

Obviously, that’s a very impressive collection of signatures, but I have to say, I think that having Kubert and Gir/Moebius — two comics giants who also happen to be two of my own favourites — right next to each other is especially terrific. On youtube, somebody or other has posted footage of Kubert, Moebius, and Neil Adams drawing together on the program Tac au tac. See Giraud (Moebius), Kubert & Adams – Tac au tac (30-9-1972) (colour) or Giraud (Moebius), Kubert & Adams – Tac au tac (21-10-1972) (black and white). How young they all look! I also love the drawing of the leering coyote on the first sheet. Not sure who the artist is — Albert Chartier? — but it’s exactly the sort of “inscription” that one hopes to get when one asks for a cartoonist’s signature!

Coyote and Chartier are not related… Coyote is Coyote… A biker from Toulouse who created “Litteul Kévin” (Little Kevin) for the Fluide Glacial magazine (co-founded by Gotlib, the magazine, not Litteul Kévin)… As for Albert Chartier, he did graphic stories in the forties, fifties and up in the Québec publication “Le Bulletin des Agriculteurs”… He started out doing caricatures in Central Park a long time ago… Some guys I know wanted to do a comics magazine and include some of his stuff… So they drove to his place in Saint-Jean-de-Matha (about an hour from Montréal)… They talked, they drank beer with the man and as they werer about to leave, they saw a pile of sheets near a table… They asked Mr Chartier “What’s this?” The man answered “Oh, that’s just old stuff…” They looked through it and it was basically the artist’s originals spanning more than fifty years… They were just amazed…

    As for Kubert, I had driven down to Northampton, Massachussets, for a signing he did at the Word in Pictures Museum for the release of “Fax from Sarajevo”… However, when I met François Walthéry (Natacha, hôtesse de l’air), he saw Kubert’s signature and his immediate response was “Oh! I wanna sign besides Kubert !”

    But Gotlib was great… The time we met, we spoke mainly about Kurtzman and how Gotlib almost worked on “Little Annie Fanny” in the seventies… Of course, Kurtzman being in the States and Gotlib in France, imagine the delay with the back and forth of the material…

  13. That would be a good idea… If I see Jimmy Beaulieu (of Mécanique Générale) or Martin Brault (of La Pastèque), I could give them a word about it…

    You know, before the age of the internet and e-Bay and Amazon, the province of Québec was probably the best place to be for comics lovers… You had the comic book shops for the english stuff and the French bookstores for the French European stuff… For the comics, there was “Première Issue” in Québec City, “Andromeda” in Drummondville (which is now “Millenium” in Montréal since the owner moved here over ten years ago), the “Juke Box” in Sherbrooke and countless comic book shops in Montréal, the best for alternative being “Nebula” (which no longer exists, I’m sad to report)…

    All that is now changed with the electronic age…

About Chartier, a book came out a couple of years ago, “Une piquante petite brune”… It is mainly wordless strips from the late fifties and early sixties… Some of them were also done in French and plublished in a number of English newspapers for the purpose of teaching French… It was published by Jimmy Beaulieu at Mécanique Générale/400 Coups… If I have a chance, I’ll send you more info and probably scans of some pages…
