Heads Up: KRAZY & IGNATZ: THE COMPLETE SUNDAY STRIPS 1916-1924

Coming in November December from Fantagraphics:

Fantagraphics doesn’t seem to be taking orders yet for this, the first* and final volume in their gorgeous, Chris Ware-designed, deluxe hardcover series of Krazy Kat reprints, but as soon as they do, they’ll have my money!

*If you bought the other two volumes, you know what I’m talkin’ about! If you’re curious how the new volume fits into the cycle of Krazy Kat reprints from Fantagraphics, see my post in the comments section.

BTW, if original art is your thing, and you’ve got US$23,750.00 burning a hole in your pocket, you would be well advised to trade your cash for this absolutely gorgeous, framed Krazy Kat page from the first year of the strip:

The seller is Lewis Wayne Gallery. I’ve purchased a number of pieces of original art from Lewis Wayne Gallery over the past few years, and I’ve never had a bad experience, though, of course, your mileage may vary…

  1. Each of the fat hardcover reprints of Krazy & Ignatz Sunday strips from Fantagraphics is a compilation of several of the thinner softcover editions. What Fantagraphics did was overprint the interior pages of each of the softcover volumes and save the signatures until they had enough for a hardcover. Two hardcovers have been published so far. The odd thing is that the Fantagraphics reprints started with the 1925 strips rather than the 1916 strips; as I recall, the decision had something to do with the existence of a previous, incomplete Krazy Kat reprint project. So the first hardcover (which is out of print) collected the Sundays from 1925 to 1934; the second volume (still available from Fantagraphics) collects the years 1935 to 1944; and the third (coming in November) goes back and collects the years 1916 to 1924.

    Thus:

Krazy & Ignatz: The Complete Sunday Strips 1925-1934 (hardcover; out of print) collects the following softcovers:

Krazy & Ignatz 1925-1926: There Is a Heppy Lend Fur Fur A-Waay (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1927-1928: Love Letters in Ancient Brick (softcover)
    Krazy & Ignatz 1929-1930: A Mice, a Brick, a Lovely Night (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1931-1932: A Kat Alilt with Song (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1933-1934: Necromancy by the Blue Bean Bush (softcover)

Krazy & Ignatz: The Complete Sunday Strips 1935-1944 (hardcover) collects:

Krazy & Ignatz 1935-1936: A Wild Warmth of Chromatic Gravy (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1937-1938: Shifting Sands Dusts Its Cheeks in Powdered Beauty (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1939-1940: A Brick Stuffed with Moom-bims (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1941-1942: A Ragout of Raspberries (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1943-1944: He Nods in Quiescent Siesta (softcover)

Krazy & Ignatz: The Complete Sunday Strips 1916-1924 (hardcover; coming in November) will collect:

Krazy & Ignatz 1916-1918: Love in a Kestle or Love in a Hut (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1919-1921: A Kind, Benevolent and Amiable Brick (softcover)
Krazy & Ignatz 1922-1924: At Last My Drim of Love Has Come True (softcover; coming in November)

One final note: the hardcovers do not include Chris Ware’s covers for the softcover editions; they do, however, include everything else.

I hope that’s clear enough. But maybe not. 😉
